In the Montessori Academy at Sharon Springs infant program, we recognize how critical the first few years are in a child’s life and how hard it is for you to be apart from your child during that time. Our goal is to make you and your child feel as comfortable as possible by creating a safe, clean, and peaceful environment. We know that each infant has different needs, that’s why our guides are trained to respond to each child based on their own schedule.
We adhere strictly to AMS standards, which state that the teacher-to-student ratio is 1:4. This ratio is less than the state standard of 1:6, meaning that our infant program is that much more intimate. Multiple Montessori professionals within the classroom ensure that your child will be taken care of constantly, as opposed to only one caregiver watching your child along with many others at the same time. Our infant classrooms therefore become an extension of the home marked by feelings of warmth from the emotional nurturing given by our guides.
As the children explore their surroundings, they absorb every aspect of the environment, language, and culture. In a term coined by Maria Montessori as “The Absorbent Mind,” these impressions and interactions with the surrounding environment do not merely enter the child’s mild, but rather they form it.
That is why we have placed so much emphasis on crafting the perfect Montessori environment for promoting learning at the earliest age. Babies learn best in a calming and soothing classroom filled with music and natural light. Our infant Montessori environment is designed with activities appropriate for the earliest stages of a child’s development.
The infant classroom is equipped with aesthetically beautiful materials such as rattles and wooden toys, which provide a more natural texture than most plastic toys would. These wooden toys are durable and will not break when children mouth, bang, and try different things with them as they grow. Mobiles are also used in our classroom to attract a child’s attention and reflect natural light into the room. All of these toys are specifically designed to enhance the child’s sensory exposure.
